Cardboard, plastic, paper, wood, metal or glass... Whatever the material used, food packaging is a real multi-task object: it must not only guarantee the protection and preservation of the food, allow its transport and storage, but also be a medium for information and communication. How can all these skills be combined in a simple "box" often perceived as waste?

Manufacturers are not short of ideas to seduce consumers... and make them want to buy! Bold design, easy opening, resealable, the packaging adapts to new uses, nomadic, ready to consume ... Objective: to stand out from competitors to retain users.

Stigmatized because of the waste it generates, it must also face strong ecological pressure: lightening of packaging, development of substitute materials... Thanks to a global approach based on eco-design, it is now possible to anticipate the recyclability of products.

For a long time, packaging had to be inert. Today, the development of new functionalities requires a case-by-case review of the migration threshold between container and content. So-called active packaging makes it possible to increase the shelf life of products, actively destroy micro-organisms or alert on possible contamination. What are the most promising innovations for the coming years? How can we guarantee to consumers the non-toxicity of materials that will be in contact with food? What will the packaging of tomorrow look like?
